Mikko learns SEO

So here. Not a lot of data. But it’s interesting that my totally new site and specifically the SEO resources page had one impression at pos 5 and has then dropped somewhat.

A few things to note

  • I’ve mentioned SEO on quite a few pages here; after all, I did set up this blog at least partly to learn SEO. Side note: It is still early.
  • I have “a lot” of outgoing links related to SEO and market research, links to tools and resources for example, I’d be willing to bet those have an effect. With a lot, I mean in relation to the total amount of links on my site.
  • Google seemingly is willing to give a new site/page a chance but will drop it down fast if it doesn’t perform (get clicks & interaction)

So what does this leave us with?

  • Focus your site around a specific theme, ideally driven by your ICP. For example, say your whole site is about SEO, and then one page answers a more specific search query on SEO, the fact that your whole site talks about SEO and not baby diapers probably makes that one page more credible in Robot Eyes.
  • Link outwards. That tells Google what you are about and where you belong.
  • Do some experiments and publish stuff on what you are interested in. Makes content gen way easier than trying to force something you dont care about all that much. A site should almost be an outlet for what you want to say, instead of you trying to say something because you are supposed to. Or bc you want eyeballs.
  • Focus on value to user. Not on what you need user eyeballs for. This would probably be the best way to eventually get the incoming links from the right sites.

Note: Don’t listen to me. This is all based on very few data points. Enough for me to infer and come up with a potentially testable thesis though. And it could be reassuring for someone setting up a fresh site.

I should probably rename the site to Mikko learns SEO. What do you think?

PS. Wrote this in SJ then emailed it to myself copied through Google Docs and added to my blog. While the publication process could be more streamlined, SJ is still where the most authentic writing occurs. For me at least.
